Scissors is an independent newspaper Zine based in Lenapehoking (Philly). It is made by and for Queer, Trans, Black, Indigenous, & POC (QTBIPOC) Dykes. Each month features a different theme and for the month of February 2024, the theme was: "The Homoerotic Best Friend That Every Lesbian Has But Ends Up Changing The Trajectory of Your Life".
Excerpt from the Editors' Note:
"It's an exploration into what it means to confront yourself through homo-erotism, the loss of innocence, and (possibly) your first heartbreak. Starting with this theme was a way for us to explore our own experiences and also tie them to a larger, communal, experience.
The visuals behind this edition is based on Victorian Valentine’s cards. This visual theme was chosen due to us launching on Valentine’s day and also due to our written theme. The Victorian love cards while very beautiful and full of depictions of love also came about in a time of pain, betrayal and deep loss. The Victorian age for many minority groups was the height of white colonization. Scissors chose the Victorian visuals to subvert images that solely depicted white individuals to be the background for BIPOC stories. Stories that also focus on pain, betrayal and deep loss which have been exacerbated by systems of oppressions established in the Victorian age."
